COACH SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW: COACH JON M.

jonm

Coach Jon M. has years of experience playing soccer and uses his BA in psychology to use when coaching soccer players of any level. He’s played for numerous teams and received several MVP and player of the year awards. His motto is “Hard Work Pays Off” and aims to give players the tools and guidance that they need to succeed.

Provide a brief summary of your participation playing and/or coaching your sport.

I have played at the highest level of club, college, semi-pro, and pro here in the USA, and have traveled abroad with teams to play famous and world renown professional and national teams. I have competed against some of the best players in the world. With so many great coaches over the years, I have absorbed coaching techniques and strategies. I have coached club teams, assisted with college teams, and have done private sessions for a long time. I also earned a BA in Psychology, and worked with multi disability adults and adolescents, as well as kids from various cultural groups for years. Together my life in social services, my playing career, and my coaching career make for a great mix of experience that can translate to the players I coach. I make sure to keep sessions goal oriented, hard working, yet fun because that’s what soccer is all about. I never want to scare someone away from soccer!

Why did you decide to become a private coach?

I became a private coach because I prefer to work with individuals who are committed and hardworking. I know that kids who want the extra attention of a private coach are the kids who who have goals for themselves and expectations for me. In team coaching, it is not always necessarily this way. there are players of various levels, skills, and abilities. I don’t like to leave anyone behind, but in a team setting, it seems as if there is always someone who is of an extremely high level (who i feel team coaching leaves complacent) and always someone struggling to understand the concepts and drills (who I believe team coaching leaves behind). Only private coaching can provide the right one-on-one attention for these players.

What can a client expect from private lessons with you?

I will try to understand your needs, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and develop a lesson plan specifically for you! I encourage players with positive reinforcement (only with true statements, I will not blow thick smoke up someone’s chimney). I discourage habits which are a hindrance to players advanced development.

What is your favorite moment in your athletic career?

I have many favorite moments in many sports. However, for soccer, scoring goals and assists that led to my team making the National Tournament was near the top. I scored one goal on a volley off of an errant opposing keepers punt, upper left 90, from 40+ yards out.  A second goal off of a high flying header on a cross from my best friend and teammate. Then returning the favor to him with an assist on a similar play where I crossed the ball to him and he connected on a header.
